October 29, 2021Presentation of the 1st Regulatory Council of the Cieza Peach PGI
The Sermuco fruit cooperative was the venue this Monday for the presentation of the Regulatory Council of the Protected Geographical Indication Cieza Peach, the body that will be responsible for regulating the actions of the agents attached to this seal of quality and to ensure compliance. The opening ceremony was attended by the municipal authorities headed by Mayor Pascual Lucas, who shared the general satisfaction and joy at the achievement of this quality seal.
The publication on 28th May in the Official State Gazette of the Order of 6th May 2021, by the Regional Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment, which grants transitional national protection to the Protected Geographical Indication “Melocotón de Cieza”, makes it possible, according to the president of the Regulatory Council Manuel Ruiz, to market the two varieties of yellow peach – Baby Gold 6 and Romea – on national territory while awaiting final approval by the European Commission.
For the formal announcement of the constitution of the Regulatory Body, its president invited the only MEP from Murcia, Marcos Ros, to the event in order to count on him to “successfully complete the rest of the work that remains to be done in the European Union”. According to the MEP, his intention is to help achieve the part related to the legal protection of peaches from Cieza that must be processed in Brussels.
The Murcia MEP highlighted the joint work of the agricultural sector, with the different administrations, the Town Council, the Autonomous Community and the Ministry: “You have managed to turn the peach into a sign of identity and a dynamic element of the economy”, said Ros, highlighting that “it is an afternoon of celebration that brings us together today after achieving last Friday’s publication in the BOE (Official State Gazette) granting transitional national protection to the aforementioned protected geographical indication”.
In this context, the last pending step is its incorporation into the European Commission’s trademark register, and for the Mayor of Cieza, “this seal of quality will help to market our star product more successfully, a peach with organoleptic characteristics that make it better than others grown in other lands, something we all knew and which was deeply rooted in the collective conscience of the people of Cieza”. He also expressed the support of the Cieza Town Council to the regulatory council in the stage that is beginning, and thanked the work of the Autonomous Community, the Ministry and the agricultural sector, “as well as the government team, and the rest of the Municipal Corporation.
