Final approval of the International PGI

Romea and Baby Gold will carry the Protected Geographical Indication Peach of Cieza labelling in all countries this season.

The necessary procedures have been completed so that the PGI varieties can be sold on international markets under the PGI Cieza Peach seal. Last Friday, the Mayor of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, together with the Euro MP Marcos Ros and the President of the Regulatory Council of the PGI Cieza Peach, Manuel Ruíz, announced the completion of the administrative procedure. The official publication in the Official Journal of the European Union will take place in a few days.

Marcos Ros affirmed that “the deadline for presenting allegations in the document has expired and nobody has done so” so “the European Union, within two or three weeks, will sign the definitive document which will allow the two varieties included to be marketed”. Pascual Lucas wanted to remember that this long process was initiated by the Polytechnic University of Cartagena together with the Regional Ministry of Agriculture and the entire fruit sector in Cieza.

Manuel Ruiz concluded by affirming that from now on, work will continue so that more varieties join the PGI, thus extending the campaign in the coming years. Regarding the season that is about to begin, he affirmed that the growers “are very aware and are grafting some of their trees with Romea and Baby Gold 6”.
